Netflix is giving the Food Network a run for its money. The streaming channel has been boosting its food shows dramatically lately. In addition to airing classics like The Great British Baking Show and Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, Netflix has a host of original food shows including cooking competitions like Sugar Rush, food comedies like Nailed It, and critically-acclaimed documentaries like Chef’s Table and Ugly Delicious.
Now Netflix just announced that it will be making a four-part culinary travel series based on the best-selling and award-winning cookbook Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, which won the James Beard award for Best General Cookbook this year.
According to Grub Street, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat author Samin Nosrat is the person who taught Michael Pollan (of “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants” fame) to cook, and Alice Waters called her “America’s next great cooking teacher.” Her book deconstructs the fundamentals of cooking to teach people how to cook instinctively and how to make delicious food with anything, without necessarily following a recipe.
Nosrat announced her new Netflix show on Instagram, and says she’s been hard at work on the series for nearly two years. It will debut in October, and it will feature Nosrat introducing viewers to “the four elements of good cooking” — the titular salt, fat, acid, and heat — while traveling to Japan, Italy, Mexico, and at Chez Panisse in California, where she previously worked.
Nosrat is extremely funny, and she’s one of the best cooking teachers around, so Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat sounds like it will be a must-watch when it debuts on October 19.
